^ Yes, there is a $500 difference. I just got 24-70 f/2.8. It complete my zooms from 12 to 200. 12-24 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 VR.
One thing that I don't like about 17-55 f/2/.8 is its flare problem. Other than that, it's a superb lens.
