Honestly, f/4 is too slow for sports photography in all but very bright light. I've shot some outdoor football, and need to be in the 2's when the sun gets low - even with the bright stadium lights (around here, football is a religion, so they're sure to put lots, and I mean LOTS of money in stadiums for high school). If you put a teleconverter on it, you'll loose a stop for the 1.4x, and two stops for the 2x. As noted above, the 2x, while degrading image quality will also cause you to loose autofocus entirely on that lens. The 1.4x won't degrade your image THAT much, but the loss of a stop will ultimately hurt.
If you are where you can rent, I recommend getting your mom or dad to rent that combination, and then you can see for yourself exactly what we're talking about.
