Hi Phyllis,
Don't get too hung up on technicalities, the beauty of Nikon is that with a few exceptions, all lenses irrespective of DX designation or not, will work fine on your D70s.
Photos for Fun was absolutely correct about the 70 300 D.
Some lenses tend to be soft at the extreme edges of the image, but as the sensor on the D70s is much smaller than the frame of a 35mm film, for which the 70 300 non DX may well have been primarily designed, only the centre part (usually the sharpest) of the image produced by the lens is used. As pointed out by fotosniper2000.
DX lenses are manufactured specifically for digital cameras with APS sized sensors, they will not work well with 35mm film or full frame FX sensors.

Your D70s also has the mechanical screw coupling needed for Auto Focus on some lenses, in addition to the electrical contact for SWM lenses like your 18 70mm(Focus motor built into lens body). So you can use almost any Nikon Lens ever made, (with a few exeptions that you need not worry about).
Link below shows what lenses are conpatible with your D70s.
