My Olympus E-400 has better reviews than canon dig.rebel and nikon d40...now my camera is also cheaper than both nikon and canon.
Olympus lenses are best but you will find more opportunities to buy used lenses for a nikon(and lenses are very expensive), and they are also very easy to find in stores.
Olympus analogic cameras use old lenses OM that are not compatible with new 4/3 standard used by olympus digital cameras(4/3 is used also by leica and panasonic but nikon is full of lenses)
Canon digital rebel makes less noise than my olympus,but olympus makes less than a nikon d40x. (My girlfriend has a nikon d40x)
Dust reduction is much better in olympus.
olympus E-400 (E-410) is smaller than the others and is more comfortable than nikon D40x
For price and quality, chose an olympus E-400 E-410 E-510
For quality lens olympus.
For price of the lenses, go for the Nikon.
For quality of the image canon
If you were going to buy a canon you should buy instead a nikon D80, that is the best choice
