Reply to Help Me Choose A Lens

tarheel nurse, I'm with scoti49 here. The two pessimists posting above aren't helpful in any way. One should be able to ask for advice without any fear of personal criticism.

As for your speedlight choices. I got the SB-800 first because of a serious case of NAS and parents who wanted to buy me a nice Christmas present last year. It is truly a wonderful and useful flash. But, just like my 70-200 VR it sits in my bag most of the time due to it's weight and bulky size. Both pull my camera "lens down" when hanging from the camera strap. I wouldn’t “walk around” with either on my D-80 because of concerns about neck pain and the potential for damaging them when they slam into something hard (I am a bit of a klutz) .

I would start out with the SB-400 because it is far less expensive than the SB-800 or SB-600 and it is more likely to be mounted on my D-80 when I need it.

If I am shooting a wedding or other planned photographic activity both the SB-800 and 70-200 come out of the bag and are on my camera. But for general walking around, they stay at home.
