Greg, regarding the "what you get" part:
The 40D has a smarter AF system and an easier interface plus some better metering capabilities. The body is mostly metal instead of mostly plastic. The brains of the 40D is a Digic III instead of the Digic II. The flash sync is rated to 250 on the 40D versus 200 on the Xti (not so important, almost the same). Reports indicate that the 40D fits the hands better than the Xti. Apparently the low light capabilities of the 40D are remarkably good.
Generally, I would not hesitate to recommend the Xti to anyone.
