Reply to Canon 50 mm f1.2 - Does anybody use this lens?

ParaScubaSailor posted a reply:

I use it with a 5D, it's my "walkaround" lens. I purposefully left a "hole" when I bought my first two lenses: a 16-35 and 70-200 zoom lenses, I wanted to buy a "good" 50mm and was unecided on the f/1.4 or f/1.8. I have been buying L lenses mostly for three reasons:

- Good picture quality

- Weather sealing

- More "professional" build

I since bought the 85 f/1.8 for portrait work as the 85 L f/1.2 is NOT weather sealed, and its autofocus is too slow compared with the f/1.8.

After looking at the quality of what others produce with their 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8, I'm quite sure I would go for one of the latter if the L didn't have weather sealing...

An extremely shallow depth of field is not what I normally look for (I seldom use my lens at f/1.2. Most often, my biggest apperture is 1.6 to 1.8 on a shoot where I want really shallow dof.

I have seen excellent portrait work with both the 50mm f/1.4 AND f/1.8 on crop sensor bodies (particularly the 20 and 30D).
