Reply to Getting a D40, Sigma 18-50 lens question

Well, I have a reason for wanting Crumpler. My first notebook backpack was a Kensington for my 12" iBook. My back threatened a strike and I got a Crumpler. Then I got a PowerBook and... a Crumpler! :)

The computer backpacks are not cheap, but they're strong, very protective and good to carry. And Crumpler usually looks more like some funky fashion accessory than something you find laptops in (black, boring but businesslike bags, I'm looking at you). Most camera bags look pretty much the same, so a Crumpler in a nice subdued (heh, designer, heh) colour shouldn't scream out "expensive camera inside!"

Of course, it doesn't have to be Crumpler. I checked out the local Lowepro guys and the bags seem good and decently priced. The shoulder bags however bored me, while the backpack is so much cheaper than a Crumpler it would be stuped not to give Lowepro a chance. The biggest photography nut I know used to have one, for his Canon 20D and PowerBook, and seemed pleased enough.

The shoulder bag issue is complicated in that without checking them out in real life it's hard to know if the size is suitable.

As for the price, well, I just think cameras in particular are ridiculously overpriced here. Sweden isn't cheap, although probably cheaper than Norway (what isn't? :) ), but I'll get a tax refund so even if I declare the camera at customs I'll be getting hefty savings. Besides, I'm allowed to bring in items of certain value tax free and that helps too. I tend to overthink stuff :p

I think I'll look into a glass filter. I'm much more likely to notice a scratched lense than any negative effects one might possibly have on image quality.

Edit: That Slingshot looks quite clever. I'll have to take a good look at it.
