I have been pondering the same question and did some experimenting as I borrowed the EF100mm f/2.8 lens and have a set of Kood Close up filters. You can see some examples here.
Personally the 100mm lens gives you much more versatility than close up filters and extension tubes, so if you can afford it go for the lens.
It's my next lens to buy :)
