they could also be expensive extra protection nowadays as you dont put a cheap light absorbing and chromatic abberation piece of cheap glass in front of your expensive lens
on weather sealed lenses you need them to complete the weather seal
useful at the beach and all that
but if you dont have a weathersealed lens plus body and dont really shoot in really bad conditions then it might not be worth it
i have uv filters on all the time though
