I went in Kenya the past fall, i was a real beginner, my first big photoshooting with a DSLR, i was on a strict budget and i ended to buy and bring with me the kit lens and the 55-200.
Right now, i'll buy and i'll take with me a wideangle (for the 1.6x crop i'd suggest Sigma 10-20), a zoom telephoto (100-400mm or if you want to stay on the cheap line the Canon 70-200 f/4 or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8), a fast prime as the nifty fifty is really a good option.
Those are my 2 cent words..
You'll enjoy a lot your travel, you'll understand this sentence: "When you breath Africa once, you'll never forget, you'd want to never come back"
