I think I do about 1/4 of my photos in the 10-16 range. I could do without it if I had too but I would really miss 10 and 15 mm.
I don't consider the 24-70L a viable option because there is no version with an image stabilizer. I consider it a very bad idea and almost a waste of money to buy a non stabilized lens if a similar one with stabilizer is available. If you have a 1.6 crop camera be happy that the 17-55 IS is compatible with your camera and just buy one.
To avoid all traces of camera shake blur I need 1/(3 x focal length) with a 1.6 crop factor camera.
I would add the 85 f1.8 to your lens collection. It is a very good portrait lens and 85 mm is a good length to make the f1.8 work well. I am considering buying this lens. If it had an image stabilizer I would already have bought it. I currently have the 50 1.8 to do the job of the 85 f1.8.
