For the blurry shots, it's most likely AF inaccuracy of the kit lens in low light, since it's NOT a fast lens. Or mirror slap or just plain camera shake when shutter was depressed on a cheap tripod.
Same apertures on different lenses does NOT mean the same exposure. For example f4 to your tamrom may not be the case on the kit lens.
And oh btw, the D40's images is superior to a D50 when used properly. It's low light/high ISO performance is top notch.
