If the ISO, aperture and shutter speeds were all at exactly the same values as those of a D50 taking well-exposed photos in the same light, wouldn't that indicate the metering was either working correctly or being bypassed by shooting in manual?
And if the body and lens are set to AF, will a D40 even take a photo if the AF fails to lock on?
Swapping the lenses between the two cameras would be a simple way of checking if it's a lens-related issue.
