Maybe pick up a s/h Nikon 35-70 2.8 AFD, and then a wider prime? I have read a lot of good things about the 35-70, particularly as a portrait lens on digital. You could then go a good prime at the wide end - this may also be better corrected than a zoom at the wide end. Maybe the Sigma 24 1.8, Nikkor 20/24 2.8, or for something a bit different an AIS Nikkor 28 F2. I'm not sure if you get meetering with AIS lenses on the F90X though.
