for the price, it is hard to justify NOT owning the 50 f/1.8. The lens is a great walk around fixed focal length lens. Very good for full body shots. Not as great for headshots due to just a bit of distortion IMHO with headshots. Great lens for couples and family shots or 3/4 or 1/2 length portraits.
The bokeh/dof from f/1.8 really opens up your photography abilities and understanding.
My dream lens that i will get sometime is the 85mm f/1.4. For 900 something I am still waiting abit.
