I have yet to try the 24-70 but did consider it in my recent purchase.
I just bought the 17-55 after a lot of deliberation. My reason was the focal length difference. I wanted it wider. Also, I plan on getting an 85 1.4 in the future which to me was close enough to the 70mm to make me consider it an overlap.
The second I took it out of the box.....I knew I made the right decision. Besides being dead sexy, it's got a feeling of quality to it. I've been having a ton of fun with it (got it on Friday) and am very pleased with it's performance.(need to upload to flickr still)
I don't plan on going full frame for a while so it was the best choice for me.
Next up 85mm 1.4.
