SFist Reviews: Queens Of The Stone Age

Days late and dollars short, it's your SFist recap of the Queens Of The Stone Age gig last December 21 at The Warfield. Our photos were delayed by Technology. SFist.com: "Putting the 'teh' back in Tehknology."

Q.) What are theees "Queens Of The Stone Age?"

A.) That'd be a band that makes hip-shakin' heavy rock 'n roll for adults.

On the second night of their sold-out stand at The Warfield, the red-headed sloe-eyed frontguy Josh Homme stepped to the mic between song and announced that the night before he'd been drunk as heck onstage and therefore "tonight, I'll let the music do the talking."

Danged if he didn't do just that.

Backed by a road-tested band, Homme whip-sawed through QOTSA's canon: b-sides, quasi-AOR hits, and desert roadtrip rumblers were delivered fresh 'n thick in front of an amped-up Warfield crowd.

Fist-pumping, head-shakin', boot-stompin'; this is music custom-built for those rare, dusky nights at the bar that actually generate the best tales afterwards.

Plenty more pictures of the show after the jump.

Photos by the author. Special thanks to Gordon "The Renaissance Man" Elgart.

Josh Homme at work. One of his nicknames is "Ginger Elvis" due to the way he shake them hips.

The ramshackle chandeliers that dangled above the stage concealed lighting platforms for the band's expressive light show.

Though the band brought their own lighting equipment, the crowd provided the smoke machine.

As QOTSA tore through the night's final song, Homme stood implacable atop his amp stack and let the last strains of his guitar ring out over the exulting audience. He didn't leap off the stack -- as the feedback began to filter out through the smoke, he merely stepped down as he acknowledged the fans and headed backstage. Didn't need to say anymore. He'd already let the music do the talking.
