Hi Bob

Will try to answer your questions bear in mind i am very new to DSLR and flash photography.

1) Will the zoom function respond to commands from the camera?

Quick answer is no however the flash head extends out manually to zoom your flash from 28 to 85mm

2) How about manual power settings?

No it hasn't however in Program TTL mode when using the flash outdoors under sunlight the flash will automatically reduce its output to illuminate the subject.

3) how would you rate the build quality on your Bower?

Standard plastic housing, build quality is good. Not up to the higher end flashes then again neither is the price.

There are 3 modes with the flash,

1)auto balanced i-TTL mode, preflash fired first then auto adjust for balanced exposure

2) Standard i-TTL mode - very similar but used for long distnace photography

3) Program TTL mode. - this is the one i use as its fully automatic through the lens with most Nikon digital cameras.

Swivel head i have no complaints does the job nicely.

I rate this flash well above the SB-400 but under the SB-600 & SB-800 which are far better flashes, however you won't buy them for US $69.
