Reply to Upgrade from Nikon D70 --> Better lens or Migrate to Canon?

darik k. posted a reply:

Why not just upgrade to another Nikon since you already have lenses for the Nikon? The D200 is pretty good from what i've seen people use at Concerts. I have a canon but i think it's better for you to stick with Nikon since you already have some nikon equipment. But then again, Nikon has soo many crazy lens options that may or may not work with the D200. I like canon because they keep it simple, EF or EF-S. The 400d is compatible with all those lenses. If you do get a canon, upgrade to a 30d or 40d. If you really have the money, then the best low light performer would be the Canon 1D models.

If you go to The Canon Museum website it gives you charts of DoF for all their macro lenses.

An up and down week for Lens

When it rains it pours as the often heard expression goes. For Lens a spate of injuries as well as managerial and front office miscues continue to plague the northern club. This week served as a perfect example. First, the news that Kader Mangane would miss three games due to suspension and a myriad of complicated regulatory trappings which will prevent the prized signing from playing for three straight matches.

Then there is Vitorino Hilton, venerable team skipper and one of the best defenders to ever don a Lens jersey goes down for most of the year. Needless to say, Hilton was the heart of the squad after the departure of Seydou Keita and there is no way the sang et or will be the same without him.

A slight hint of hope emerged during the week with a Coupe de La Ligue victory in a northern derby matchup against rivals Lille provided a ray of hope. Luigi Pieroni’s early goal assured Lens passage through the first round. The defense was solid throughout and the hard fought victory seemed to be a good preparation for the clash with Lyon.

The Lyon Debachle

The events leading up to wednesday’s Ligue 1 matchup at the Stade Gerland could not fortell the devastating consequences the men in the blood and gold would face. Actually, they weren’t even in the blood and gold, creamsicle orange and white was the soup du jour.

At the risk of sounding like a whining sore loser, the officials at Lyon were quite simply horrific. In fact, coach Jean-Pierre Papin after the game remarked, “it was the officials who made the difference.” From Toulalan’s hand ball to questionable penalties on Jonathan Lacourt and Adama Coulibaly being in Lyon the referees seemed to be contemplating what sumptuous meal to indulge in after the match in France’s gatronomic capital instead of the contest at hand.

Lens 4-4-2 formation seemed to work well early with some spectacular interplay between Razak Boukari and Aruna Dindane. It seems everytime they actually let Boukari play he makes things happen. Lens needs to find a way to consistently pair up Dindane, Boukari and Akale with Seid Khiter also getting in the mix. But I suspect Papin will continue to rely on mediocre or washed up players like Pieroni, Lacourt and Monterrubio. I also suspect this will effectively aid in keeping Lens firmly planted at the bottom of the league table as well as a curt au revoir from UEFA.

As for Lyon, well they played like Lyon which means they made Lens pay for stupidity and capitalized on the officials’ incompetence. After all, this is what good teams do. I would like to hear Inara’s take on a few things like, what exactly is Lyon planning to do with Nadir Belhadj? Granted, Fabio Grosso had one of his better games against Lens but I see Belhadj as an up and coming star. Furthermore, what are the plans for Johan Hartock? Are they planning on playing him? How about sending him to Lens? We need all the help we can get. Besides, I know Bernard Lama thinks the world of Hartock and whenever the great Lama speaks I listen.

So then, another weird week for our beloved northern giants, despite some positives the overall outlook remains grim. No matter how bad the officials were against Lyon we did NOT deserve to win and this team deserves to be where they are in the league table. President Gervais Martel has made several questionable moves since last years’ dumping of Jussie and Thomert, the nonsensical loan of Issam Jemma and the poor treatment of itandje as well as the Guy Roux debachle which also led to the departure of Bonaventure Kalou to the Emirates. It seems we are in for a wild ride this season. Let’s just hope it ends here in Ligue 1.

The zooms around the "normal" range would cover more photographic situations. The Tamron 17-50mm is certainly a good way to go for a second lens. For more range, the Nikkor 18-70 is probably worth a look.

Macro capabilities of a zoom aren't worth much. For a good macro lens there a so many options, which to chose should be guided by your needs. Whether you're better off with a Nikkor 60mm, a Tamron 90mm or 180mm or ... depends on your subject mostly.

Vignetting is there on full frame, as is distortion (at 17mm). Both can be easily corrected with very simple PP. As far as sharpness goes the two lenses are almost identical according to reviews. I am not willing to pay 1000$ more for a stop of light. The 17-40mm is also MUCH lighter which is important to many. I would prefer getting 2 other lenses (e.g. the 50mm f1.4 and the 100mm macro) before giving the extra cash for a lens in the same range as one I have that works perfectly. Yes, I can see the worth of f/2.8 but no I do not see it as worth it at an amateur level.

The Canon 200mm f/2.8 would be a good choice if you think you need to long end more.

At the end of the day it's all subjective and if you are happy missing out on 100mm of zoom then go for the 55-200 and save some money, but, if you are like me, you would allways be regretting not getting the 70-300.

And that means that you will find that a wider angle lens will be necessary. Maybe not right away, but plan on it.

To work out magnification divide the size of the object photographed into the size of the film or sensor. In this example 7mm on the photo divided into the width of the film in this case 24mm therefore magnification is 3.5x approx. But with some digital camera's the image is digitized as well to give greater macro. ie digitaly enlarges the image. Similar to digital zoom. The example show here is the actual width of the negative 24 mm.

Buy Contact Lens - LASIK Eye Surgery and the Benefits of the Procedure

LASIK (Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a common type of eye surgery that many are using to be able to decrease their dependency on glasses and contact lenses.

LASIK is a method of refractive surgery that is a regular procedure, often used for treating nearsightedness. Its popularity is due to the improvement of vision, without the major side effects that other eye surgery methods may produce.

With the eye being one of the most sensitive areas of the body, it might be somewhat surprising to learn that the LASIK procedure is relatively simple. In fact it’s not uncommon for those patients that have undergone the procedure to be working again the following day.

The eye is firstly washed out with a solution to numb the area. The next step is to hold the eyelids open using clamps. This will prevent blinking. After the solution begins to take effect, the surgeon will make an incision in the cornea. Once enough tissue is removed using the laser, the surgeon can then close where the incision is made, and the procedure is complete.

The benefits of LASIK eye surgery is there for all to see (excuse the pun!). Thousands of people have undergone the procedure, but for some the apprehension to go through with eye surgery may be attributed to the main benefits not being made clear, which are mainly two-fold:

1) The possibility to live life without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

2) An increase in the quality of vision.

The cost of having LASIK eye surgery performed can vary. The price depends on factors such as the equipment used for the surgery and also the testing carried out before the procedure. You may find that different providers will perform different levels of testing, so ensure that you research into different providers and find out what is included in the price. Of course you cannot put a price on your vision, but there is certainly no harm in discovering which provider offers the required features in the quoted price. One point that must be considered though is to find a surgeon that has experience with the procedure. Do not simply opt for the cheapest as they may not necessarily be the best.

This article only briefly touches on the area of LASIK and you are encouraged to find out more. Visit http://www.eyesurgerylasik.net to find a wealth of information on the topic, including Wavefront Lasik.

So, in your shoes I'd avoid EF-S (DC en Sigma parlance) cropped sensor lens. Go for full frame lens (EF or DG Sigmas) because you'll use them in your future full frame camera.

Pics on a shoestring posted a reply:

I recently got the sigma 70-300 apo macro lens and honestly don't regret buying it. It lacks a bit of sharpness at 200-300 (though that might be me not holding the camera steady, as I have no tripod), but it does give very nice results. I don't mind the loss of the 18-55 range, as I don't use those lenses for the same purpose (and I don't mind changing lenses when I do).

I do get a lot more chormatic abberation than with the 18-55. I have yet to find out if it is a lens-related problem or if I have merely been unlucky in my choice of subjects and woul have had the same results with the18-55.

The most recent photos are all taken with the sigma, if you want to have a look at the results.

Adaptive Lens Technology Advances with U of Central Florida Research

At the epicenter of a photographer’s camera is the lens. While most photographers are accustomed to traditional mechanical lenses made of glass or plastic, they could soon see their electronics instead use liquid crystal or liquid lenses. University of Central Florida (UCF) researchers have developed two types of adaptive lens technology, liquid crystal (LC) and liquid lenses. With electric voltage or applied compression, respectively, the UCF scientists can control the focal length and aperture of these adaptive lenses…

A flash diffuser

B&H Used Nikon Lens Issue

Bygbaby posted a new topic:

A few weeks ago, I purchased a used 17-55mm 2.8 lens from B&H & really love it. I have been noticing that when I take photos of light subjects, I get these small black specks on the image when I look at it in Photoshop. On darker subjects it is non issue.

Today, I actually saw what I think is causing the issue. I saw a few large(ish) particles underneath the lens.

I am not sure what to do. B&H is closed & I feel kind of ripped off now stuck with a lens that may need a repair. How could they miss this, they are experts, right???

Has anyone experienced this & how could something get under the lens???

Thx!

18-200 lens:

I know everyone wants to go with the flow, and with what many big photo review sites like might say, and the flow is to say it's not a good quality lens but only good enough for everyday simple photography. This is just because it has such a wide range and the "believes" are that such a wide range has to make major compromises on most everything else. Wrong. That thought belongs to the past.

MrDAT is comparing lenses and quality yet I don't see any photos in your Flickr account that show any extreme photography where any real evaluation of quality can be assessed. Maybe I've missed it or maybe you do not have any such photos posted on Flickr.

It's an excellent lens in quality and sharpness, comparable to the best macro lenses (which I already stated I've compared to). Only thing is the bokeh is not as great and that there are issues at both extremes, but those extreme range problems are truly minor ones.

Do true extensive tests before you decide on the quality of a product, especially when you have that product. Don't fall in line on what others are saying because it's popular.

Test, test, test, and make your own deductions.

Reply to Best portrait lens for $500?

I have to disagree with Acesnines about wide angles. I wouldn't shoot all my portraits with a wide angle, but there isn't anything inherently bad about a more exaggerated perspective. Perspective and focal length selection depends very much on personal style and preference.

I personally almost never shoot anything longer than 70 mm, because I feel the flattening effect of a longer focal length just, well, flattens the subject.

Here is are some extreme examples with a 18-70 mm kit lens at its widest:

Katri at dusk

Katri at sunset

My walkaround lens is 17-35 mm, sometimes spiced up with a 50 mm. I do most of my portrait stuff with a 28-70 mm lens, but at higher apertures it doesn't offer much that the kit lens couldn't do.

The Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8 has gotten some favorable reviews and feels like a smart range of focal lengths. For $500 the original poster could almost get the Tamron and a Nikon 50 mm f/1.8 lens, which should be a nice combination for almost everything.

Canon Pixma iP4200 Printer Review & Canon Pixma iP4200 Ink Cartridges

Everybody has an opinion, which is for sure. The one consensus opinion about this Canon printer is that it gives good final print with great color images. Generally, there are a few issues that you might find with just about any printer today but the lower price, under $70.00, makes for allot of forgiveness when the issues do pop up.

Slow off the line

Canon printers are usually fairly quick when it comes to page per minute counts. The Canon Pixma printers, however, takes a few seconds to get it moving. Once it is all warmed up it can meet its 56 second 4×6 claim but it has to work to get there.

Talk to me

First, remember that there is no computer cable included in the price of the unit so be forewarned and buy one before the unit gets through your front door. Anyway, there does appear to be an issue with the unit talking to PC printer drivers. Many have complained that they did not have the compatible drivers for the unit. The problem is easily solved by visiting the Canon printers’ website but it is just another little thing, in what seems to be a long line of “little things” that keep you from hooking the unit up and printing in five minutes. If your original intent was to use the unit for digital camera snaps you might be advised to just forget about the PC and keep the unit separate. Don’t get me wrong the Canon Pixma iP4200 printer works great once you get it set and stretched out but you just have to get it there.

The age-old ink issue and smart chips

This would not be a printer review if the cost of ink and printer manufacturers gouging with high refill ink prices was not mentioned. This issue is just the same here as it is with any other inkjet printer. Low up-front printer cost, high back-end ink cost. There is very little new about this issue other than the Canon ink cartridge in this instance burns through quite a bit of ink to arrive at its great color images. It is really a case of; you want solid quality deal with the price. The smart chip issue appears to be a real pain with the Canon Pixma printer. If you try to substitute a refill cartridge for a Cannon ink cartridge be prepared to reset a bunch of stuff. This particular smart chip likes to teach lessons to those that try to use refilled non-Canon cartridges. There is an Epson chip resetter available maybe one for Canon will appear soon

Chromadrom 2

The Chromates are happy-go-lucky, quantum particles that just love playing games. One little Chromate in particular is a bit behind the pack when it comes to faster than light travel and needs your assistance to help him make the grade. Each level is a long, perfectly straight track, and all you have to do is reach the finish line without falling off. There are numerous obstacles like holes, ramps, other Chromates, crazy winding paths, fires and walls, to name just a few, that make it increasingly challenging. You can even set the speed individually for each level so you will never be out of your depth. In the 100+ Arcade levels you will encounter over 40 game features and unlock 5 other modes of play:Time Trial Mode - Learn all the tricks to get along these tracks in the quickest possible time.
