70-200 is useful for every kind of photos. It's a very good lens. But perhaps a bit long for portait. Canon EF 80mm 1.8 may be a good option, as well as Canon EF 100 macro 2.8. One of my favourites is Canon EF 28-105 3.5-5.6 usm II. Good range for portait, good quality and very low cost.
