This should be a good basic lens for you. I dont see much need unless you are doing this professionally. Move up in lenses as you need to or if you want to latter on. The only reason I can see to do that would be to be able to flatten the image to give a more realistic look. A 55mm lens is about the standard for all cameras and is a good starting point for portraits. Ive never had any problems useing my 50mm lens. I would like an 80mm though. Im fine with what I have now though.
So pretty much you can do whatever you want. The only thing thats holding you back is practice. Practice helps alot.
