I always use UV filters on my lenses. I just factor the cost of a B&W UV filter into the cost when I'm thinking about buying a new lens. Bus since I like to shoot on the street and I live about a block or so from the foggy Pacific Ocean, I really do feel that the filter keeps my lenses clean. The salty air just coats everything with crud.
Other than the UV filters, the only filters I Have found useful with digital are circular polarizers and the occasional ND grad.
