A fast prime is a must and the 50 1.8 the obvious choice if you are on a tight budget. Otherwise the Sigma 30 1.4 Canon 50 1.4 ore Canon 85 f1.8 are more interesting because they avoids the awful Canon 5 blade aperture design. The last example is at f3.5 and shows the pentagons the lens creates from out of focus lights. All other photos are fully open. Tests show that at f1.8 the lens has very soft corners. But I never noticed them in the many photos I took at f1.8. Starting at f2.8 the image quality is excellent.
The 50 mm is a moderate tele on a cropped sensor camera. Very often there is a wall between you and the place you would need to be to take your photo. And in many other cases you can't get fast enough to the right place to use the lens. I often miss feet of a part of the head if I use this lens.
And here is the effect of the 5 blade aperture - none at all at f1.8 but it can get very bad at f3.5
