I can highly recommend the 50-150 ƒ2.8. I love using it!
The only prime below 105mm that will auto-focus with the D40 is the Sigma 30mm ƒ1.4 as mentioned. The Nikon 105mm ƒ2.8 VR Macro is the next shortest auto-focusing prime and can (I gather) work reasonably well for portraits.
