~Ha, yeah I always thought they kind of give off the "look at how big my lens is" look...
I do find that, aside from preventing flare and ghosts, It does a great job of protecting the end of the lens while shooting. I was "hired" by my school (ha!) to do some shots at a regatta when the waves weren't all that calm. That hood saved my 55-200 from close encounters with various parts of the chase boat on multiple occasions. Not too mention that you should always have it on when shooting on the water anyway.
