Floralgal - don't think SLR vs. S5 IS. Think lenses. The lens on the S5 was ridiculously short. I can't find it, but the lens is probably seriously like 8mm on the wide end. Maybe less. I've seen 3mm before. You have so much DOF at such a wide lens (remember - wider == more DOF) that you will get sharp shots with lots of DOF with your S5.
But a 90mm lens on a DSLR, with its bigger sensor, will need f16 or f22 to get the same DOF. At 2.8 and macro distances, for instance, we're talking maybe .5" of DOF. That's _half_ an inch. Maybe less. The example above from the 60mm Nikkor has maybe 3mm. Something like that.
