@floralgal and everyone - This thread illustrates once again why this is the superest group on Flickr!
Woo-hoo (ala Homer Simpson) I made up a new word! If all those politicians who are always trying to impress everybody and the English guys wearing Oxfords who write those dictionaries are so smart, why did they leave it to a dummy like me to say that something is "superest"?
I couldn't resist :-)
When folks use the word "macro" (which is, as explained above, a technical term that has often been stretched and bastardized by lens manufacturers' marketing departments), we're always willing to explain the difference.
In fact, most people like you just want to take very closeup photos and probably don't need to spend $400+ on a dedicated macro lens for the occasional really close shot. As mentioned above, there are much less expensive alternatives. And don't forget, too, that with the D80's 10 MP you have quite a bit of leeway for cropping a photo if it's well-exposed and sharp.
For example, this very small flower is nearly twice its actual size when viewed in the medium size below.
Taken with the 18-200VR at 60mm, 1/100 @ f/5, matrix metering, -0.7 EV, heavily cropped from the original full frame. Neat Image was not used on this. It would have cleaned up the noise very nicely, but an 8x10 print of this from Mpix on their metallic paper is perfect.
