Sorry for the late reply.....I checked out of the forums for a weekend and forgot to check back in!
Yes, it is MUCH easier to see your plane of focus on a 4X5 than it is using a DSLR and T/S lens. From experience, when shooting with the T/S, I no longer shoot at wide open apertures (unless I am tethered to a computer/monitor). There have been times when I WAS shooting wide open that I swore I knew exactly where the plane of focus went, but upon looking at the image at 100%, found out that i was sadly mistaken! So my advice for that part is to experiment alot, especially before shooting anything really, really important. As you use it more, you'll get a good feel for it....
As for being limited to only the front standard, I don't think that will be a problem. On a view camera the front standard controls your plane of focus, and the rear is used to control shape (think of a classic problem like shooting a tall building), so realistically, unless you are shooting a lot of things that need perspective control, you should be fine with just being able to move the front (lens).
