Reply to OT: Depth of field?

The screen on my 300D is not very snazzy. Zoomed to the max it'll tell me if it's sharp up to a point. But the image used on the screen is not the image you took. It's a reduced-sized jpeg.

On the other hand, if I know the depth of field in metres and the 1/3 2/3s rule, then I know which row of people to focus on to get everyone in focus (in a group shot for example).

This doesn't mean that you need to be able to quote the DOF for each zoom / f-stop set on each lens, but a few known entities will save a little chimping and give you a little better control.

Your original comment (I know you didn't mean that you didn't understand... sarcasm has a habit of disappearing into the dryness of text!) came across as demeaning. The implication being that because you didn't feel a need for the calculator, the OP must be in some way a lesser photographer.

I accept that it may not have been your intent, but there it is. Of course... it doesn't help that your avatar is clearly looking down his nose at me! ;-)
