Add velcro to any flash without worrying about the sticky mess if you decide to take it off.

jess.baumung posted a new topic:

So I just signed up for Flickr tonight, and I wanted to post instructions to make a very simple device which allows you to attach velcro to your flash without having to worry about it leaving a gross mess behind if you decided to later take it off.

I thought of this only becase I had just purchased two Canon 580EX II's this past week, and I wasnt too stoked on the idea of sticking gross velcro on the side of them.

So here is what I did. Its really simple and works perfectly.

1.) Take a strip of the soft side of the velcro, and wrap it around your flash head. I started at the top of the flash, and you can start on either side. Make sure which ever side you choose, you go across the top, then around the entire head of the flash, and then overlap the top side of the flash. Now you can cut the strip of velcro at this length. Make sure your velcro is long enough to overlap itself.

2.) Ok now take a strip of the hooked piece of velcro that is slightly smaller than the top side of the flash head. Take that hooked piece of velcro, and remove the plastic from the bottom to reveal the sticky side. Do the same thing to either one of the ends of your previously cut piece of the soft side of the velcro, and stick the two pieces together.

Its probably best to cut the plastic that covers the sticky side of the soft velcro for now so you can keep the rest of it on after sticking the smaller hooked piece of velcro onto it.

Alright so now you should end up with a piece of velcro that you are able to wrap all the way around your flash head, which will velcro onto itself using the smaller hooked piece you just stuck on, and still have the soft velcro on top for you to connect whatever modifier you should choose to place on there later.

3.) Now we come to step 3, and this part your just a little bit more on your own since I used something totally random I had lying around to do what I needed to make this whole thing work.

Basically you need some sort of rubber to stick along the rest of the soft part of the velcro to prevent it from slipping off the flash head.

I had an old Dell mouse pad lying around which had a rubbery underside which I peeled away from the top of the mousepad, which happened to be the exact width I needed to cover the rest of the sticky side of the soft velcro.

After peeling the rubbery bottom off of the mousepad, I simply took the covering off the sticky side of my velcro and stuck it to the top side of my rubber. After I had it stuck on there I took some scissors and cut the rubber so it was even with the width of the velcro.

That pretty much was how I made this thing. You can wrap it tight around the head of your flash, and the rubber bottom side will stop it from sliding off,. The double sided end will velcro onto itself and hold it on good and tight.

Simple really. Now if for some reason you decide later that you dont want velcro on your flash, you just take it off and store it anywhere in your bag for later.

Make one for each of your flashes and your set.
