As a D80 user, I personally rely on the top display very often as a quick reference and quick change point for current WB, ISO, QUAL, etc. settings. Without it, I'd get really frustrated digging into the menu system when I need to make a quick change.
For me, I purchased a D80 mostly because of the lens drive issues. I have several friends who are NIkon users as well and we share our equipment often.
I don't use bracketing very often at all...I use bulb quite often. The optional battery grip to me is a neat thing...I don't use it. I think it also allows the use of AAs but I'm unaware of their performance.
Both are nice cameras...I've suggested the D40 and the D40x to several friends but for me I'm glad that I spent the extra $$ and would do it again.
If you don't find a need for D80's additional features, get a D40 and a killer lens rather than the package deal. Thoughts?
