Also, depending upon the sky try a circular polarising filter, this will act to deepen the sky if there's colour and will act as a ND filter as well.
One final thought, shoot in raw then make multiple exposure from the raw file and combine in PS for a pseudo HDR effect - don't over do it though, poor/over cooked HDR look dreadful imho, I know, I've overcooked many an image!
