A DSLR camera gives great pictures at high ISO's , meaning the higher the ISO,the more sensitive the sensor is to light which means that you can take pictures in low light situations that you wouldn't be able to get with a P&S. If you are taking pictures outside then that's usually not a big deal. If you are taking indoor pictures like weddings, parties, family pics, sports, school events , then DSLRs can be very important.
