The 30D has no liveview, but is an excellent camera. Depends on what you want to shoot. The 40D has liveview and autofocuses faster. It also has a faster burst mode, and higher resolution. If you want to shoot sports and other fast action subjects like screaming kids, the 40D may be more suited to you. But if you look at the 30D Flickr group you'll see that it is a very capable machine, especially with the right lenses.
