This is virtually the only lens I use for Flyball photography - it paid for itself quicker than any piece of gear I've owned.
Used to use it for Concert Photography, but it's a bit challenging to use in small clubs with really low light - hand holding it is a real bitch, you're almost better off with a 70-200/2.8 IS at that focal length.
Personally, I wouldn't say it's a particularly fast focusing lens - the 85/1.8 is faster. But it has fantastic color rendition, dreamy bokeh and is quite sharp at f/2. Another great aspect of the lens that has more to do with the focal length than anything else is that at f/2 you'll see almost zero birefringence - whereas all the other primes that Canon makes (yes, including the 85/1.2) will show it all over the place wider than f/2 or so - that's the main reason I use it for Flyball, since birefringence is a real problem with black/white dogs and the kind of light you see in agg centers, etc.
