Reply to What lens to buy next?

The 50 is cool (and I do have one), but consider what type of shooting you do most and think about off-brand glass - it can save you lots of money and both image quality and build quality have improved a lot in recent years. Some possibilities:

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 - very sharp, fast, 1/3 the price of the Nikon version. A big step up from the kit. Also, it feels better than the kit, which gives you a psychological boost.

Sigma 10-20 - ridiculously, addictively wide

Sigma 30 f/1.4 - incredibly fast but not quite wide enough

Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 - fast telephoto doesn't come much better at this price. At a pinch, you could use this as your wal-around lens
