I suggest the Nikkor 17-55 or the Tamron 17-50. Both cover a range similar to the kit lens, but are sharper, wider, auto-focus faster, and are built better. Being able to get to f/2.8 helps in low light or where you need a high shutter speed. Both feel better than the kit lens, as has been mentioned above. I used the kit for over a year, but now feel that it is almost "toy-like" next to the above lenses.
Without breaking the bank, I suggest the Tamron (~USD 450). I have it and am impressed. I almost went the Nikkor (~USD 1200), but couldn't pull the trigger when it came to the price.
The 50 is a nice lens, but I don't think it's all that useful on a DX sensor camera, unless you really need to go down to f/1.8 and have a lot of space.
