re: rubber lens hoods and hand usage: these are both cheap/free and viable, but you lose the additional protection you get from having a hard plastic (or even metal) lens hood.
I'm not a lens hood nazi or anything, but I've bought them for every lens I have that didn't come with one and haven't regretted it a bit. (=
