Yes, it is different when you are close for an extended time like B&H. In my dealing with B&H, which are numerous, they will more than likely do what ever they can to correct the situation.
Just think out loud, are you sure it's not dust on the sensor? I have a couple older lenses with some pretty huge specs of dust and even one with a significant crack in one of the elements. I can't see any adverse effects at all.
