It's a great lens and compliments the kit lens - the 'missing' 15mm (55-70) are of no consequence.
It does not feel too heavy or unbalanced in the hand when attached to the D40. I also own the sigma 10-20mm and would say the 70-300 feels lighter and easier to control.
At the end of the day it's all subjective and if you are happy missing out on 100mm of zoom then go for the 55-200 and save some money, but, if you are like me, you would allways be regretting not getting the 70-300.
