You're right. It's that I remembered my camera has a f/3.5 extra stop in between 4 and 2.8 , but granted that's not the "conventional" stops division.
I never said both lenses cost the same, you get what you pay for. Moreover, I understand the 17-40mm f/4 L is the cheaper "L" grade lens,that is not for nothing.
