Vignetting is there on full frame, as is distortion (at 17mm). Both can be easily corrected with very simple PP. As far as sharpness goes the two lenses are almost identical according to reviews. I am not willing to pay 1000$ more for a stop of light. The 17-40mm is also MUCH lighter which is important to many. I would prefer getting 2 other lenses (e.g. the 50mm f1.4 and the 100mm macro) before giving the extra cash for a lens in the same range as one I have that works perfectly. Yes, I can see the worth of f/2.8 but no I do not see it as worth it at an amateur level.
