Interesting - that rule was not in effect on Sunday .. not only did I travel with my camera, laptop (and a little bit of lens cleaning fluid that I had forgotten about...), but also my small poodle.
Security didn't ask me to take the camera out, only the laptop and dog. Because the dog was below, I had to get into the overhead to get the camera out when I saw some cool sunset/cloud photos. Unfortunately, by the time I got the camera out, put on the polarizer, and started snapping away, the 'cool' shot had come and gone, leaving me with just a 'neat' shot:
