D40 is only AF-compatible with AF-S lenses. Nothing to do with DX/FX, they all work fine in D40 only without AF and manual focus lenses work as well only without metering.



I believe your Sigma 10-20mm is DX so that will not be able to utilize the full sensor on the D3 and will only work in crop mode.

The 50mm will work fine and so will the 28mm allthough I understand the 28mm was not the most praised Nikkor made.



So with your current lens line-up you'd be fine with the D300 unless you're going for the different FOV FX will have on your 28 and 50mm.



With regards to the release date you're right on all points. Information was released a while ago, you can pre-order and delivery should be in november but as with any previous Nikon release units in shops will probably be scarse for a while.
