Canon sure is/was good in low light. But what i disliked about canon is that it feels so uncomfortable, and the controls and control you have over the camera are just.. blegh. But that differs per person of course.
What i really don't like about canon is that they are very much into marketing tricks (white lenses, "L" lenses, etc etc) Everybody thinks that when a lens is white or an L lens it IS a good lens, but i've seen some lenses that are expensive, L lens, and some white that are just not good.
Now nikon, on the other hand, has cheap lenses that can perform miracles. Which is kinda nice.
