it's a very good start--
for even cheaper! vivitar 285hv (but 285s are big!)

The DX will be just like a none DX on your canon body.
The nikon sb-XX flashes will work on your camera but only manual mode. (If i got all this wrong someone with better knowledge pls, tell me.)
