Compactness and low price are the two virtues of the absence of a focus motor; one compensating virtue of the D40 is that it can mount (but not focus or meter) ancient pre-AI lenses that are available extremely cheaply. For me, this has been a godsend, allowing me to quickly and cheaply build a nice little stable of fast, high-performance glass for next to no cash.
BUT if you're someone who both needs autofocus AND wants to buy a bunch of lenses AND doesn't have a lot of money, the D40 may not be for you.
