I bought the d40x. In retrospect, I feel I should have bought the D40. Why? Read Ken Rockwell's excellent review of the D40x here where you can learn about the advantages/disadvantages compaired to the D40. I would only be re-itterating what I read there. The extra money could be put toward lenses.
Either camera is an excellent purchase. I just feel like the extra mega-pixels and the very small increase in frame rate don't justify the extra $200 price tag.
